Madagascar, an island apart

Marilyn Plénard
Madagascar is an island apart. The people there are the heirs of navigators who, braving the oceans, came from faraway South-East Asia aboard outrigger canoes, and of the Bantu peoples who, yearning for new horizons, left their neighboring Africa. As time passed, the Swahili people, the Portuguese, the French… all succumbed and, still today, those who lay their eyes on it succumb to its incomparable charm. They succomb to its culture, its smiles, its courage… and to its nature. And other ancestors also originating from the African continent, the famous lemurs, which can't be found anywhere else in the wild, reached the ”Great Red Island” perched on piles of branches carried by the waters of the Mozambique channel millions of years before that. A great island of which they share the sanctuaries whether they be green or arid, with mammals, insects, birds, and reptiles having nothing to envy in singularity and in endemic wildlife. Madagascar, an island apart, has an adventurous soul. That is the beautiful soul of those who dwell there.
