the jazzy poet
Nimrod, Gopal Dagnogo
We speak of it!
Gopal Dagnogo, who had already illustrated a few works in this collection, has surpassed himself here with compositions (in black and white) that are sometimes plays on Negro art, Surrealism or Henri Matisse’s birds. With this work on Léon-Gontran Damas is probably offered to us the jewel of the works by the À dos d’âne publishers, who invite discovery of the men and women who have changed the world.
The biographer, Nimrod, himself a poet, is a fine connoisseur of the poets of negritude. The illustrations by Gopal Dagnogo present the characters with a little broken-down air as Picasso does, with a wink at Matisse as well.
